Evaluation of the 5-ethynyl-1,3,3-trimethyl-3H-indole ligand for molecular materials applications

The modification of conjugated organic compounds with organometallic moieties allows the modulation electronic and optoelectronic properties such lends them to a variety material applications. complexes [M(Cp′)(L)n] (M=Ru or Fe; Cp′=cyclopentadiene (Cp) pentamethylcyclopentadiene (Cp*); (L)n=(PPh3)2 1,2-bi(diphenylphosphino)ethane (dppe)) [M(L)n] (M=Ru; (L)n=(dppe)2 (P(OEt)3)4; M=Pt; (L)n=(PEt3)2, (PPh3)2 tricyclohexylphosphine, (PCy3)2) modified 5-ethynyl-1,3,3-trimethyl-3H-indole ligand were prepared characterised by NMR spectroscopy, IR single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Cyclic voltammetry spectroelectrochemistry ruthenium systems showed single-electron oxidation localised over M–C≡C–aryl moiety. N-heteroatom indole Lewis base was able extract proton from vinylidene intermediate as well coordinate CuI. Examples wire-like also studied single-molecule break junction experiments but molecular formation not observed. This is most likely attributable binding characteristics substituted terminal groups used here gold contacts.
